Section 3 – Temporary Employment

Temporary Pool

To use a candidate from the temporary pool, contact Employment Services at 773-834-3549. The following information will be requested:
  • name of supervisor;
  • department requesting the temporary employee;
  • start and end date;
  • skills required for the position opening;
  • rate of pay;
  • account to be billed;
  • hours and schedule (if applicable) per week;
  • work location including address, room number, and phone number; and
  • reason for request for a temporary.

Temporary candidates are recruited from many different places including:

  • UChicago Jobs;
  • former and current University of Chicago employees;
  • full-time and Temporary Pool employee referrals;
  • job fairs;
  • University of Chicago Alumni; and
  • student spouses/partners.

Our candidates are pre-screened, including criminal background checks, reference checks, and optional testing. Also, using the Temporary Pool can be very cost effective. When filling a position through our program, you set the rate of pay and have the opportunity to screen eligible candidates.There is a 7.4% benefit charge for FICA, unemployment and Workers’ Compensation. FICA includes Social Security and Medicare. There is a 10% commission charge assessed to the wage rate to cover the administrative cost of the Temporary Pool, which includes testing, and background and reference checks. This charge, however, is much less compared to an outside agency charging up to three times as much.

Contact Employment Services, for more information about the temporary pool. A Temporary Internal Request Form [PDF] is available online.

External Searches for Temporary Employees

A department that has a temporary position opening may fill the opening with a temporary employee from an external agency. In such instances, the department must complete the Temporary Employment Form and supporting tax documentation. (See New Hire Paperwork section for a listing of required forms.) These materials should be sent to the Records Office, Ingleside Hall, second floor.
