Purpose:

To identify the workweek of staff employees of the University and define full-time and part-time employment statuses.

Policy:  

The workweek for units begins on Sunday at 12:00:00 a.m. and ends Saturday at 11:59:59 p.m. Certain offices and units, because of the nature of their operations, may require different work schedules. Positions are categorized by the amount of hours worked, the regularity of the work schedule, and the duration of the position. The University encourages flexible work options.

Guidelines:
  1. The University's standard workweek for pay computation purposes begins on Sunday at 12:00:00 a.m. and ends Saturday at 11:59:59 p.m.
  2. The normal business hours of the University are 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Certain units, because of the nature of their operations, may require different work schedules.
  3. Most employees work a weekly schedule of thirty-seven and one-half (37.5) hours per week which consists of five (5) seven and one-half (7.5)-hour days, Monday through Friday, including one unpaid hour for lunch.
  4. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to establish work schedules to meet the operating needs of the unit, advise employees of the daily and weekly work schedules of positions upon hiring and changes in work hours as far in advance as possible.
  5. Some units may allow an employee to work an alternate or flexible work schedule while still supporting operational needs. (See Policy U310 Flexible Work Options )
  6. Circumstances may arise in which a non-exempt staff employee is required to work overtime with little or no advance notice. [See Policy U304 Compensable Time and Compliance with Fair Labor Standards Act (Overtime)]
  7. A position is categorized by the amount of hours worked, the regularity of the work schedule, and the duration of the position:
    1. Full-time: A position requiring thirty-five (35) or more hours per week. Most full-time employees work thirty-seven and one-half (37.5) hours per week.
    2. Part-time: A position requiring less then thirty-five (35) hours per week.
    3. Regular Position: A job which is expected to last at least twelve (12) consecutive months. Regular full-time and part-time employees who work twenty (20) hours per week or more are eligible for benefits.
    4. Temporary Position: A job which cannot last longer than twelve (12) consecutive months, six (6) consecutive months, or ninety (90) consecutive days, depending on the type of assignment. A temporary employee is not eligible for paid allowances (e.g., holidays, personal holidays, vacation, or sick leave) and is not eligible for participation in the University's benefit plans
