Avoiding Corrective Action

The best way to avoid the need to correct employee performance is to ensure that your employees understand what is expected of them. It is important to maintain open lines of communication with all of your staff. It is also critical that your communication be consistent, that you apply policies and work rules uniformly, and that you evaluate all employees objectively.

By clarifying your expectations and maintaining open lines of communication, you will have a better awareness of each employee's performance. You should monitor each employee's performance on a regular basis. Conduct performance discussions throughout the year to give employees both positive and corrective feedback on their performance.

You should also document each employee's performance and any performance-related discussions in an Incident Diary.
