Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. If you cannot find the information that you need, you can contact our department by phone (702-9600) or via e-mail (uhrm-training@uchicago.edu).

Question: Suddenly a work deadline came up, and I need to cancel my registration. Will my department still be charged a fee if I cancel late or do not attend?

Answer: Yes. Unless you cancel your registration within five business days of the class, your department will be charged a penalty.

Question: I cannot attend a class that I registered for and now my department will have to pay a penalty if I cancel. Can someone else be sent in my place?

Answer: Yes. If you send a substitute from your department in your place, you will not be charged a penalty. The substitute must be able to meet all prerequisites.

Question: What happens if I arrive late for a class?

Answer: All of our courses begin promptly at their scheduled times. Please arrive 15 minutes early for all classes. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for a computer training course, you will not be allowed admittance to the class, and your department will be charged the appropriate penalty. If you leave early, your department will also be charged a penalty for a partial-day absence.

For non-IT training courses, admittance for late-arrivals will be at the discretion of the instructor.

Question: How do I know which computer class to take based on my existing skills and knowledge?

Answer: For information about the skills taught in each Computer Concepts class, you can access the full course description for each class on the training.uchicago.edu Web site.

For example, if you have used Word 2000 in the past, but you are unsure whether you should take the Introduction or Intermediate course, then you should look at the full course description for the Introduction class. If you know how to do all of the functions listed on the Introduction course description, then you should register for the Intermediate class. If you do not know how to do all of the functions listed on the Introduction course description, you should register for the Introduction class.

Question: How do I pay a course fee?

Answer: Please bring a signed Interdepartmental Form #62 to class with you, or you can send us the form through Faculty Exchange to JRL 124.

Question: What happens if I only attend half of a full-day computer course, or if I leave a computer course early?

Answer: We will charge participants a penalty for partial-day absences from computer courses. If you know that you will not be able to attend a full day of computer training, please wait and take the course the next time it is offered.
